RHCSA Certification Guide

RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) is the entry certification of the Red Hat program and one of the most persuasive credentials for enterprise Linux operations roles. It is a purely hands-on exam: no multiple choice — everything happens on a real system. This guide covers the exam format, the objectives, a study plan, and how to set up your lab.

Objectives Explained (Mapped to This Site)

Section titled “Objectives Explained (Mapped to This Site)”

The official objectives fall into six groups, each mapping to free tutorials on this site:

  • Archiving: tar, gzip, bzip2
  • Text processing: grep, sed, awk, redirection and pipes
  • Basic vim, man pages, /usr/share/doc

Practice: Cheatsheet, Shell Scripting

  • Conditionals, loops, argument handling
  • Shebang and exit codes, scheduling with systemd Timers

Practice: Shell Scripting, Timers

  • Boot into a specific target (rescue/emergency)
  • Process management: nice, kill, top
  • Logs: journalctl filtering, /var/log
  • Network diagnosis: ping, ss, tracepath
  • Software: DNF install/repositories, RPM queries, module streams

Practice: systemctl Basics, Journal Logs, DNF Basics

  • Partitioning (MBR/GPT), mounting via /etc/fstab, LUKS encrypted volumes
  • LVM: create and extend, swap partitions
  • Adding and removing swap files

Practice: Disks & Partitions, LVM Management, RAID & Swap

  • Creating and mounting XFS/EXT4, UUIDs
  • NFS mounts, autofs on-demand mounting

Practice: Filesystems (XFS/EXT4), NFS & Mounting

6. Deploy, Configure, and Maintain Systems (Including Security)

Section titled “6. Deploy, Configure, and Maintain Systems (Including Security)”
  • Users and groups, sudo authorization, cron/at
  • SELinux: modes, context restoration, booleans
  • firewalld: zones, services, rich rules, port forwarding
  • Containers (Podman): pull from a registry, run containers with persistent storage, run them as systemd services — new in the RHCSA 9 objectives
  • Tuning: tuned profiles
  • Resetting the root password (break root password — nearly guaranteed on the exam)

Practice: Users & Groups, sudo Configuration, SELinux Basics, Firewall, Podman, Boot Issues

Spread over 8-10 weeks (1-2 hours per day):

  1. Weeks 1-3: Work through the base tutorials for all six objective groups, typing every command yourself
  2. Weeks 4-5: Build two RHEL 9 VMs (or AlmaLinux 9 / Rocky 9 — the objectives are identical) and practice in a simulated environment
  3. Weeks 6-7: Full-length practice exams (Red Hat offers a free sample; the community has many practice sets), drilling whatever runs over time
  4. Week 8+: Review weak spots and book the exam

The common approach is two VMs under KVM/libvirt:

Create a practice VM with libvirt
$ sudo virt-install \
--name rhcsa-lab \
--memory 2048 --vcpus 2 --disk size=20 \
--cdrom /var/lib/libvirt/images/AlmaLinux-9-latest-x86_64-dvd.iso \
--os-variant almalinux9

Practice VMs do not need a Red Hat subscription: every task in the objectives works identically on AlmaLinux or Rocky. (You can also get genuine RHEL free via the developer subscription.)

If you are heading toward enterprise Linux operations or DevOps, yes: it is the Linux certification most often named in job postings, and its hands-on format gives it real weight. Experienced admins can take it directly as a job-market signal.

Does practicing on AlmaLinux or Rocky hurt my prep?

Section titled “Does practicing on AlmaLinux or Rocky hurt my prep?”

No. The exam runs in a Red Hat-provided RHEL environment, but every tool in the objectives — dnf, systemctl, firewalld, SELinux, podman — behaves identically on the rebuilds.

A standard purchase includes no free retake; buy a retake-inclusive bundle or re-register. Wait until practice exams consistently land around 80% before booking.
